Jamaica... A State of Emergency
Today the Jamaican govt. declared a state of Emergency/curfew for parts of Kingston and St. Andrew due to the ongoing rise in crime and violence and gang-related activities. The Commissioner of Police stayed that there has been a reduction in crime. But If crime has dropped generally why the need for a state of emergency. It seems that there is a rise in crime in the Kingston and St. Andrew region and the gangs are more coordinated and organized than ever. So crime has fallen but it’s fallen in some areas but risen drastically in kingston and St. Andrew accounting for more than half of all crimes in the country. How are to deal with this tactic - do we render evil for evil, do we utilize forces at all means to root out the gangs and criminal elements in Jamaica. Jamaica’s gang problem is the product of slavery, poverty, political manouvring but also deep hatred Jamaicans have for law enforcement stemming from injustice and police brutality.
There’s deep hatred towards law enforcement officers in Jamaica from deep wounds resulting from the past which erodes any respect for law and order. Police from Jamaica brutally murdered my cousin Nerron visiting from UK some years ago. They had mistook him for someone else and they hauled him out his car told him to run and then opened fire on him killing him”. I’m deeply wounded by that. Deeply hurt and there has been no justice after all these years. I’m still carrying the hurt and pain. They told them to run innocent boys and then opened fire on them as they run. What vigilante justice for innocent boys who had nothing to do with crime. Police can’t be judge jury and executioners and the problem of lawlessness must deal with those who are charged with upholding it.
