Corporations... more concerned with their Bottom Lines than Fixing Racism?
#Corporations have facilitated racism by terminating blacks so easily or making it difficult for Black professionals to grow. One major Firm said my #black brother did not fit the “culture”. So they let him go. If you’re black you are outside of the #corporateculture. However Corporations are now saying that they want to get involved in fixing race. But does that mean the same thing - placate black people by skirting the issue - throw a luncheon with some black leaders and make some donations to “white-washed” black groups or programs for photo ops, then they get back to the business of making money and getting the right fit, without dealing with racism and discrimination within their own companies.
Black professionals are rare and they are paid way less than their colleagues and are terminated much more easily or have the greatest expectations.
I leave with this story: in 2014 I was a Financial Advisor at major Bank. I was the only licensed producer/Advisor at the Branch who could sell Annuities and high yielding financial solutions/product. A white gentlemen made an appointment to come in to meet with me to discuss moving his money from a regular savings account to an annuity after I had convinced him it was the best thing to do. He came into the office and saw that I was Renaldo McKenzie, a black guy with a white Scottish Surname and an Italian first name. I sounded British or Canadian on the phone. He was livid and shocked when he saw that I was black and would not shake my hand or sit with me. He left the Bank and stood outside and my VP apologized to him and then got another Advisor from another Branch to meet with this client. Now this angered me so much. In fact it was easy for them to let me go as I did not fit their culture and their clients refused to do business with me. Instead of apologizing to me and decline the clients business, I was made to feel guilty. In effect, companies are more concerned with their Bottom line that with fixing Race. So let’s see what they will do now.
By the way here’s another case in point: linked in carried Business Insiders Reort on Monday regarding Patagonia’s move to boycott facebook. #Patagonia’s move seems disingenuous and hypocritical. Have you seen the latest #Diversity #Report? The lack of people of color within #Patagonia and other “Big” firms senior leadership mirrors the disparity across the country. 6% of #Patagonia’s Executives are diverse and less than that are black.
