Remembering Corey Tribble...

Corey Tribble passed on Sunday Night; gun downed by men in North Philly as he tried to be the peacemaker at a cookout in his community. I am not sure why he was killed by his killers, but no one has the right to take anyone’s life and he had served his time and made peace with his past.

But on a different note, I wish to pay tribute by sharing some stories I have of Corey Tribble my brother whom I have shared some time with in my journey in life.

Corey was focused on bettering himself and community. He was not selfish or individualistic but was passionate about working hard so that he can help his family, friends and neighborhood.

He was working on setting up his LLC’s that he’d asked me to assist him with, and he was interested in and was having private lessons to improve his language and communication skills. Now we know he wasn’t any saint but he had done his time and had made an about turn that was completely different from what we know of him. He was now just about money and doing it the right way. I remember him saying he also wanted to work on his music. I said “I didn’t know that you rapped”? So, he started rapping on the spot. Freestyling on some track. It blew my mind. He was so good. I was like “dam you gotta record you let people hear you”. He was extremely great. I couldn’t imagine how he wasn’t rapping in the first place. He said “well I plan to go to the studios and work on some things but I don’t write anything, everything in my head”. His memory was indeed impeccable.

But what was really life changing was his new way of stopping to talk and encourage the youngsters. I remember sitting with him and a young man came up and he pulled him in the car with us and started lecturing him and encouraging him to be smart focused and not mixed up with people or the wrong crowd and to work hard. He was so passionate and he went on and on on a monologue as if he were a preacher preaching on Sunday to his parishioners. But I could tell how moved the young man was by Corey’s speech. It showed for me his love for his neighborhood and fellow brothers.

Final thought. He was quick to share his things with others, he was very kind and understood the practice of “Koinonia” that we in fraternity or “Greek” world or brotherhood understand to mean that what my brother has belongs to him and his brothers and he only has it as a steward holding it for the brotherhood. He understood what brotherhood was (community) and although he was at times annoyingly loud and troublesome, he did it with humor and apology and then continued being your friend as if all was good and he were never loud which was his way of saying we still good that was just me being crazy! RIP Corey Tribble.
