Police Must Work To Restore Their Credibility And Moral Authority!
The Police Union says that “... police morale are low. “He said he’s already hearing concern many of the 1,300 officers the Seattle Police Officers Guild represents. He said many officers are struggling with morale and now losing their chief. (http://komonews.com/news/local/police-union-says-officers-struggling-with-low-morale-following-chief-bests-retirement)
But I’d say, what’s worse or adds “insult to injury” is when those charged with upholding the law abrogate their duty and practice racial injustice. And We must truthfully confront our history of racial injustice before we can repair its painful legacy of police violence. Therefore, we must work even harder to abolish it.
Further and more importantly, Police violence and vigilante justice on black lives must stop because it affects police moral authority and reduces any currency and credibility they may have left to serve and protect all. In effect, creating lawlessness and disorder; setting the stage for “civil unrest” like those happening now across the Country.
Police must work to restore their credibility not by endorsing one political candidate over another and continuing the practice of demonizing those who are crying for Help and those who are calling for reform.
Police Morale is low but Police Moral Authority is even lower, which affects their ability to even police. So, why are the police more focused on police morale when their credibility and moral authority are in jeopardy? Unless your morale is low as a result of your low moral currency and authority. Therefore the first thing to do is to reform and restore so that you can regain the trust of all the people you serve.
I wrote this story about a week or two ago. Today there is rioting in Lancaster PA over the shooting of a 27 Year Old Man who Police claim was brandishing a knife above his head “in a threatening way”, whatever that means. But if these riots are gonna end, police violence will have to end. And the public are suspicious of police and their leaders and as such any violence will be questioned and meet with public anger until the people are satisfied in their minds based on a continuity of good policing and other efforts that the police can be trusted. But you can’t stop the symptom without dealing with the cause. And it starts with the police and the people’s leaders.
Police Must Find A #lessviolent way to neutralize anyone they deem threatening but less harmful especially when they have greater control of the situation. If Police is to restore their #credibility, they must play their part in demonstrating an #optic of #nonviolentpolicing. Until that is settled their will be unrest!
