Wherever Is “God”?
“God” (however called known or described) is always “man’s ULTIMATE CONCERN”. Man is limited and God is Not. For God is “than that which nothing greater can be conceived or imagined”. Yet man in his limitations seeks to comprehend the reality and where-a-bouts of God as if God is lost or God is Not.
But if we who are limited have yet to grasp the essence of the universe and all that is, how are we to ascertain in totality or quintessentially that which is Ultimate, great and unfathomable! Nevertheless we are encouraged in scriptures to seek God with all intensity of our being m, with “all our heart soul and mind” (in effect with our emotions affections and intellect) and we will “realize” God.
And when or if we “find” “God” we may be stunned to discover that “God” was always with us, yet we have denied access due to limitations of self and lack of faith. And so the saying goes, your faith takes you as far as you want it to go.
There’s a story of a woman of faith who was living in an area undergoing the torment of a storm. She was holding on to her dear life as her home was destroyed and she was left holding onto a wall stomp on the verge of collapsing. She, being a Godly and faithful woman called out to God! But there was no answer. A boat came by with smelly fish and a fisherman he offered help but the woman said my God is sending help. Then a woman was passing by on a log and offered help but the woman of faith said God is sending help. And finally an old retired officer came by on a raggedy old truck and offered help but the woman again said “God is sending help”. In the end the woman died and when she met up with God she indeed inquired of God, where were you when I needed you? God responded, “three times I came by but you did not accept my help”.
When Einstein discovered gravity was it not always a reality? And when Columbus found the New World, was there not a World there in the first place. These stories while simplistic on the face of it may provide the clues or guide for human efforts to apprehend and comprehend God’s reality and modus operandi or human failings and ignorance.
Example, people are asking Where is God in this Pandemic? Was God not there in 2002 warning us when a small case of the SARS virus was discovered. And in 2017 when a study was published detailing the virus and warning of a possible outbreak. And in 2019 when the virus started in Wuhan, the world still ignored the signs. And when it was discovered that social distancing and masking methods may help save and prevent the spread, those signs were precluded with indifference, ignorance and even comedy. Yet we ask wherever is God... in all of this Pandemic!
Unless, we are asking “where is God” in this very ominous and precarious time because the “Church Is Silent. But the Church is not God and God not the church. So if the Church is silent, it is their message of challenge, hope, healing and love for all which is is the message of God, that is missing from the world of chaos thereby abrogating their duty as “God’s people”.
