Beware of The Interactive Technology (IT) Act...
We have a tendency to demonize a “good” thing, making sweeping generalizations and casting aspersions of guilt on an innocuous neutral experience or medium. It is human beings that make choices about the tools we use, not the tools themselves. Only to use as a basis to chip away certain rights and freedoms under the guise of evil and protection. But it is our freedoms and rights that must be protected.
According to a story in the Guardian, the “Senate judiciary committee voted on Thursday to advance the Earn It (“Eliminating Abuse and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technology”) Act, legislation that on paper is intended to address sexual exploitation. However, privacy experts say the act would give the Department of Justice unprecedented power over the internet and potentially threaten the privacy of messages sent online...”(https://apple.news/AxfBbr4CPRXWajeHDfDt6cA)
The bill while is intended for good, may trample and interfere with our freedoms and privacy, thereby undoing the same thing that those who set up the bill to do, to protect against exploitation. The bill if passed and become Law can provide an opportunity for our private conversations to be tapped. The bill protects the possibility of pedophiles exploiting kids but it exposes our privacy and freedoms, to exploitation and there’s already distrust and suspicions among many Americans concerning their elected officials and their indifference to some systemic abuses in society. So to bring this bill is incredible and insensitive given what’s happening in America today.
We may want to consider other laws and parental controls and programs that encourage better parenting and management of our children’s welfare and safety. Instead we opt for “bigger” government in our daily lives. Which is over-reaching. We should encourage parents and communities to monitor their kids and not become parents for the internet and its users.
We the American People MUST start to question and find suspicious, decisions made by our Leaders as some decisions are based in assumptions that ultimately deny and negate our Constitutional Rights and Freedoms.
