I was Thinking About The #GOAT Conversation And Concluded That We Have Gotten It Completely Wrong!

I was thinking recently about the #GOAT conversation & concluded that we have gotten it completely wrong. To talk about an individual GOAT in a sport that’s purely based on teams is an illogic & minimizes & discriminates against the other team member’s efforts.

The fact is that Michael Jordan and “KingJames” don’t play & cannot play without a team. To talk about them as the goat belittles the impact of the other teammates who are necessary for game play, & game action. When we talk about GOATS in @NBA it should be about the team NOT A person.

NBA is not tennis or an individual sport. We may talk about @serenawilliams as a goat because she is part of a team of one & doesn’t share her titles. #MJ & #LBJ rings are not their own, it is only representative of the teams title/s or championship that they played on or with. Yet we belittle the team by obfuscating—Singling out the few over the many.

In effect, The mentality of elitism & status finds it’s way in sports teams that work together but reserves rewards & accolades for one over the many. Instead we should be talking about teams. We will never settle the goat debate because of this.

The difficulty of ever settling the goat debate is for this very issue. #MJ had six rings because he was on a team that won six titles. #LBJ won four because he played on three different teams that won titles & did not play on a great team that could provide six straight rings.

So in this case, it’s the team that wins together not the individual. If Michael didn’t have #Pippen and #Rodman, would he have had 6 rings & from the same team? Would he have had to switch teams in order to realize success? We know that he never played on a team like the 1991-1996 Bulls team. That team was one of the greatest teams of all times. In terms of leadership and skill, MJ was outstanding. But that Bulls organization was next to none and it translated itself into a winning team mixed with talent and chemistry and pizzazz! Lebrun has never had that luxury until he played with the Miami Heat which was still not as great as that 1991-1996 Bulls team. However he was genius enough to either have to switch to find such a team or play Like a God when he placed the Cavaliers on his back to secure a win over the next best team ever the Golden State Warriors. Yet if it weren’t for Kyrie clutch shot in that final game, LeBron and that team would have never tasted victory. It took a team effort driven by individuals actors at various crucial points within the game to win. So how can we just talk about LeBron without highlighting the other players whose roles may not have been as strong but necessary for the win!

So let us therefore revolutionize the way we think about the greatest of all time in a tram sport. Just as the united church in jamaica had to undergo liturgical renenewal to reform it’s worship and liturgy to become more inclusive of the other, NBA May need to do so as well. But this may take some time and a process of renewal that reforms it’s language to become more inclusive and logical.
